Top head warns communities face ‘shock’ from private school closures as Labour’s VAT raid leaves them under ‘profound’ financial pressure
Anne Cotton, chair of the association representing more than 300 leading independent schools, says Labour’s VAT on private school fees has left some schools under severe financial pressure. She warned that closures have shocked communities and affected pupils, families, staff and local organisations, highlighting the policy’s consequences beyond the schools themselves.
The 20 per cent tax was introduced in January 2025, with the Government saying it would help fund state education improvements, including 6,500 new teachers. The Independent Schools Council says more than 100 private schools have closed since its introduction; smaller, lower-fee schools are said to be particularly vulnerable as some families move their children to state schools. Cotton also called for independent schools to make their existing partnerships with state schools and community groups more visible.
