## Key points

- Garcia promises wide-ranging House Oversight investigations.
- Democrats gain subpoena power when Congress convenes in January.
- The White House says the inquiries are politically motivated.

## Summary

Representative Robert Garcia, the California Democrat expected to chair the House Oversight Committee, has pledged broad investigations into President Donald Trump’s administration and allies. His warning follows Democratic gains in the midterm elections, which will give the party control of the House and the committee’s subpoena powers from January.

Garcia said inquiries could examine the Trump family’s business dealings, cryptocurrency ventures, Pentagon contracts, alleged abuses by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and people he said were connected to Jeffrey Epstein. He launched his bid for the chairmanship on Thursday and is widely expected to win; the White House has called the planned investigations politically motivated.
