His prolonged absence follows years of health scares, including public freezing episodes in 2023 and falls in December 2024 and February that left him needing a wheelchair, and echoes a similar case involving New Jersey's Tom Kean Jr, who missed over 140 votes before attributing his absence to depression. McConnell, the Senate's longest-serving party leader, is not seeking re-election; Andy Barr won the Republican primary to succeed him in November.
