Total Eclipse of the Heart singer Bonnie Tyler dies aged 75

BBC Entertainment · 4 hours ago

Bonnie Tyler, the Welsh singer behind global hits including Total Eclipse of the Heart, Holding Out for a Hero and It's a Heartache, has died aged 75. A statement from her family and team said she passed away unexpectedly in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness for which she was being treated. Her death marks the loss of one of Wales's most recognisable musical figures, prompting tributes including one from Wales Secretary Jo Stevens, who called her a "Welsh music icon".

Born Gaynor Hopkins and raised in a council house in Neath, Tyler was discovered in a Swansea club and released her first single in 1977. Total Eclipse of the Heart, written by Jim Steinman, topped the charts on both sides of the Atlantic in 1983, making her the first Welsh person to secure a US number one. In May she had been placed in an induced coma after emergency intestinal surgery in Portugal. She represented the UK at Eurovision in 2013, was made an MBE in 2023, and this year saw Total Eclipse of the Heart pass a billion Spotify streams. She is survived by her husband of more than 50 years, Robert Sullivan.
