Tourist, 23, dies in scuba diving test ‘after group split up’: Instructor charged

Daily Mail · 1 hour ago

A diving instructor in Argentina has been charged with manslaughter over the death of a 23-year-old tourist during a scuba diving test off the coast of Punta Cuevas in the country's south. Sofia Devries, described as an influencer, died in February while pursuing an international diving certificate, and her death has raised questions about supervision standards during the dive.

Devries was one of eight divers exploring the wreck of the ship Hu Shun Yu, now an underwater park, alongside her partner Leonardo Alonso, under the guidance of 26-year-old instructor Thiago Nahuel Pocovi. Prosecutors allege that in "extremely reduced" visibility, Devries and her partner were left without direct supervision after reaching the seabed. She reportedly showed signs of distress, removed her regulator and ran out of air; her body was recovered two days later at a depth of 20m (66ft). An autopsy concluded she died by drowning, with no signs of involvement by others, but the Chubut prosecutor's office has nonetheless charged Pocovi over the incident.
