Mohammad Nazeer Paktiawal died from an accidental drug reaction in ICE detention
Mohammad Nazeer Paktiawal, a 41-year-old Afghan national who fought alongside US Special Forces in Afghanistan for a decade, died in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) just one day after being detained for deportation proceedings. According to his death certificate, he suffered an adverse drug reaction to an unidentified substance, triggering anaphylaxis and worsening his asthma; his death at a Dallas hospital on 14 March was ruled an accident. His death has caused outrage because of his years of service as a US ally.
His case stands out among more than 50 ICE detention deaths during Donald Trump's second term as the first to be ruled an accident, with most others attributed to natural causes or suicide. The advocacy group AfghanEvac and two members of Congress have called on Texas authorities to release his autopsy report, which officials have sought to withhold, arguing that disclosure would interfere with a pending criminal investigation. AfghanEvac president Shawn VanDiver said the family had a right to know what happened.
