Former England rugby international Joe Marler is set to become the first celebrity Gladiator on the BBC's revived Gladiators series, appearing under the name "Mauler" when the fourth series airs in 2027. The move marks a notable crossover for Marler, who has built a media profile since retiring from rugby, including a stint on the first series of Celebrity Traitors, and reflects the growing popularity of the rebooted show since its 2024 return to BBC One.

Marler, 36, announced the news in an Instagram video filmed in the Gladiators dressing room, saying "Mauler will see you now." The BBC said his debut will feature "special appearances packed with power, personality and plenty of surprises", with filming for the new series currently taking place in Sheffield. He joins established Gladiators including Nitro, Viper, Diamond and Sabre; a separate celebrity spin-off is also in production, featuring AJ Odudu, Sara Pascoe, Chris Ramsey and George Clarke.
