New York Times executive’s court filing alleged abuse before Dublin killing
A 40-year-old New York Times executive was shot dead outside a sports store in Dublin, California last weekend. His parents-in-law, both aged 77, were arrested on suspicion of murder. The shooting occurred during an acrimonious divorce between McKinsey and his wife, with both parties having filed restraining orders alleging domestic violence and abuse.
Court documents filed by Jonathan McKinsey detailed allegations of physical and emotional abuse by his wife, Candice Jang, including claims that she forced him to eat a cockroach and struck him with a frying pan, as well as alleged verbal assaults by his mother-in-law. McKinsey, who had worked as head of engineering for games player experience at the New York Times since 2023, filed for a restraining order in December 2025. His wife filed a counter-order alleging he had threatened to kill her and her parents.
