## Summary

Tributes have been paid to David Fair, co-founder of the influential art-punk band Half Japanese, who has died at the age of 74. His death was confirmed on 30 August by Thick Syrup Records, with tributes following from his brother and bandmate Jad Fair, producer Don Fleming and numerous musicians and fans, reflecting the pair's lasting influence on underground and lo-fi music.

Fair founded Half Japanese with Jad in the mid-1970s after the brothers moved from Michigan to Maryland, releasing debut EP "Calling All Girls" in 1977 and first album "1/2 Gentlemen/Not Beasts" in 1980; he remained in the line-up through "Loud", "Our Solar System" and "Sing No Evil" before leaving in 1987, though he continued to collaborate with Jad intermittently thereafter. The band, cited as an inspiration for Sonic Youth and Nirvana, opened for the latter on their 1993 "In Utero" tour, and Don Fleming's tribute disclosed that Fair had been treated for cancer in recent years, though no official cause of death has been given.
