Lewis Miley is set to play a more central role for Newcastle United as they face former team-mate Sandro Tonali at Tottenham, following Tonali’s summer move to Spurs. Despite returning from a broken leg with limited pre-season minutes, the 20-year-old started Newcastle’s opening match against Liverpool and has earned strong backing from manager Matthias Jaissle and ex-defender Kieran Trippier. His development matters because Newcastle must replace the influence of departed midfielders Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes.

Miley signed a new long-term contract in May and played 1,403 Premier League minutes last season, the most of any English teenager before turning 20. Among Premier League players aged 19 or under, he led for assists (four), successful passes (738), final-third passes (188), line-breaking passes (164) and interceptions (20). Newcastle have also signed Nico Gonzalez for up to £52m, but expect him to complement rather than block Miley’s progress.
