Trump administration can target Ethiopians for deportation

BBC World · 2 hours ago

A US federal judge has ruled that the Trump administration can proceed with ending Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for roughly 5,000 Ethiopians living in the United States, exposing them to deportation. The decision, by District Judge Brian Murphy, lifted a temporary stay and marks the end of TPS protections for the last of more than a dozen countries targeted under Trump's wider immigration crackdown, following the Supreme Court's June ruling that ended similar protections for Haitians and Syrians.

Ethiopia's TPS designation, granted by the Biden administration in 2022 amid the Tigray war, gave eligible migrants work authorisation and protection from removal. The Department of Homeland Security said those affected must "leave immediately or be deported", while advocacy groups warned the ruling endangers thousands given continuing instability in Ethiopia, including renewed fighting in Tigray and insurgencies in Oromia and Amhara. Murphy dismissed some claims but allowed plaintiffs to continue arguing the terminations were driven by racial or national-origin discrimination, in violation of the US Constitution.
