## Key points

- Stephen Miller will become chief of staff on 9 November.
- Susie Wiles is moving to Trump’s political operation.
- Accounts differ on whether Wiles resigned or Trump initiated the change.

## Summary

Donald Trump has announced that Stephen Miller will replace Susie Wiles as White House chief of staff from Monday, 9 November, with Wiles moving to his political operation. The change comes days after Democrats’ major midterm election victory, which dealt Republicans a significant defeat and prompted calls for changes within the administration.

Trump said he wanted to make a change and praised Wiles’ work, while a senior White House official said she had resigned, leaving conflicting accounts of her departure. Wiles said Friday was her last day and described the role as an honour; she was the first woman to serve as chief of staff and had worked with Trump since his 2016 campaign. Miller, previously deputy chief of staff, is one of Trump’s close advisers.
