## Key points

- US envoys Witkoff and Kushner met Zelensky in Kyiv after Moscow talks with Putin
- No breakthrough announced; a third meeting with European allies is planned
- Fighting continued overnight despite an agreed capital-strike pause

## Summary

US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner completed their first official visit to Ukraine on Sunday, holding talks with President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv, a day after meeting Vladimir Putin in Moscow, as part of a renewed but faltering American push to end the war. The visit came as Washington's peace effort had lost momentum following six months in which the Trump administration's attention was focused on the Iran war, while fighting along the 1,250km front line remained largely static and both sides had recently escalated aerial attacks on each other.

A senior Ukrainian official said two rounds of talks took place with the US delegation, focused largely on "how to get through the winter", with a further meeting planned involving French, German and British representatives. Putin's adviser Yuri Ushakov described the more-than-three-hour Moscow meeting as "constructive" but announced no concrete outcomes, noting that economic and joint investment projects were also discussed. Despite Putin and Zelensky having agreed to pause strikes on each other's capitals during the talks, the two sides continued trading attacks overnight, with Russian strikes killing one person and wounding at least ten, and Ukraine's air force intercepting 82 of 108 Russian drones launched along with six missiles.
