## Key points

- Trump linked the Iran war and high petrol prices to Republican midterm losses.
- Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress.
- Trump promoted the White House ballroom project after the election.

## Summary

Newly added coverage says Trump acknowledged that the Iran war and rising petrol prices contributed to Republican losses in the midterm elections, as Democrats took control of both the House and Senate. The results have prompted Republicans to blame him and question the future of the MAGA movement.

At his first public appearance after the vote, Trump focused largely on the White House East Wing ballroom, signing a steel beam described as the last to be installed. He said the venue would accommodate up to 2,500 guests, with five floors of infrastructure beneath the White House and more than 100 drones for defence; he also described it as drone-proof and bulletproof. Trump said private donors were funding the project.
