Thune said he had already spoken with Trump twice on the morning of the interview and that the president had also called him over the weekend, characterising their contact as regular rather than strained. He noted he does not call Trump daily, framing this as evidence of a normal working relationship rather than estrangement, and sought to downplay suggestions that tension over the legislation had damaged their alliance.
