US President Donald Trump has ordered a fresh wave of airstrikes on Iran, declaring last month's US-Iran ceasefire "over" after Iranian forces attacked commercial ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. Speaking at a NATO summit in Turkey, he hinted that further strikes were imminent. The move raises the prospect of renewed open conflict between Washington and Tehran and threatens a vital international shipping route.

US Central Command said the strikes were intended to "further degrade" Iran's ability to threaten freedom of navigation in the Persian Gulf, holding the regime accountable for "unjustified aggression" against civilian shipping. The strikes reportedly hit the southern port city of Chabahar, cutting power in parts of the city, with around 10 explosions also heard in Konarak. The escalation followed a funeral eulogy for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in which a state-backed speaker openly called for Trump's death. Trump has also threatened to reimpose a naval blockade on Iranian ports, the lifting of which was a key term of the ceasefire.
