Trump presses Thune to keep Senate in session until SAVE America Act passes
President Trump has urged Senate Majority Leader John Thune to keep the Senate in session until it passes the SAVE America Act, a Republican voting bill, or abolishes the filibuster. The intervention heightens pressure on Senate Republicans ahead of the planned August recess and exposes divisions over whether the legislation can advance.
The bill would require documentary proof of US citizenship for voter registration and photo identification for federal elections. It does not currently have sufficient Senate support, as most legislation needs 60 votes to overcome a filibuster; Trump has therefore renewed his call to end that rule. Senators Mike Lee, Rick Scott and Ashley Moody have also said they would oppose recessing before the bill is passed.
- Trump wants the Senate to delay recess for a voting bill.
- The bill lacks enough Senate support to pass.
- Trump again called for abolishing the filibuster.
