## Key points

- Trump is reportedly weighing Hegseth’s future after the midterm losses.
- Advisers cite concerns about delayed updates on Iran.
- Democrats may make a replacement harder to confirm next year.

## Summary

The article reports that Donald Trump is considering removing Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth after Republicans lost both chambers of Congress in the midterms. This is a shift from the earlier account that Trump had no plans for Cabinet changes; advisers reportedly say he has been asking whether Hegseth should keep his job.

Sources quoted in the article say Trump was frustrated by receiving updates about the Iran conflict after events had unfolded, including claims about Iranian air defences and missiles. They expect Hegseth could leave before the new Congress is sworn in next January, when Democrats are expected to take control of the Senate and make a replacement harder to confirm. The White House and Pentagon say Trump has confidence in Hegseth, while Democrat Thomas Massie says he plans to seek an impeachment vote.
