## Key points

- Trump blamed France’s immigration policies for unrest.
- Nearly 1,000 people were arrested in France on Saturday.
- French protests include grievances over schools, austerity and living costs.

## Summary

Donald Trump said he warned French President Emmanuel Macron that France was being damaged by immigration policies that allowed people who, in Trump’s view, rejected French identity to enter. He cited unrest in France, Spain and Italy to argue that his own administration’s border policies had prevented similar problems in the United States.

The comments came as protests and unrest continued in France, where nearly 1,000 people were arrested on Saturday, according to Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez. Demonstrations began over school staffing and conditions before widening to include opposition to austerity measures and concerns about wages, pensions and living costs. Macron said he would seek to ban protests organised by groups without legitimate authority, blaming ultra-left groups for riots and looting; Trump claimed there had been no illegal border crossings into the US in the past 18 months.
