President Trump has declared that Bombardier, the Canadian private jet manufacturer, will no longer be permitted to sell its aircraft in the United States unless it establishes manufacturing operations there. The announcement, made via a Truth Social post on Monday, comes amid escalating trade tensions between Washington and Ottawa, with Canada set to introduce new counter-tariffs against the US the following day. Analysts have questioned how such a ban could realistically be enforced, given that Bombardier's jets are certified by the US Federal Aviation Administration and comply with the USMCA trade agreement Trump himself helped negotiate.

Bombardier already has a substantial US presence, employing 3,500 people, working with 2,800 American suppliers, and producing wings for its flagship Global 8000 jet in Texas, alongside a defence factory in Kansas. Roughly half of its 5,100-strong customer fleet is based in the US, and most of its jets use American-made engines from Honeywell and GE Aerospace. This is not the first such threat from Trump, who in January said the US would decertify Bombardier's Global Express jets and threatened 50% tariffs on Canadian-made aircraft; neither move materialised, and Canada went on to certify several rival Gulfstream planes the following month.
