## Key points

- Trump says he intends to keep Hegseth.
- Advisers are canvassing views on his future.
- The House could consider impeachment next week.

## Summary

Trump has reiterated that he intends to keep Pete Hegseth as Secretary of War, even as advisers weigh whether he should remain in the cabinet. The pressure follows Democrats’ strong midterm victories and criticism of Hegseth’s handling of the Iran war.

Hegseth has rejected calls to leave for a newly open Senate seat in Tennessee, and the Pentagon says he is committed to serving through the end of Trump’s term. The House could consider an impeachment resolution as soon as next week, while Democrats plan to pursue him if he remains in office when the new Congress begins on 3 January. Trump also said he hopes to work with Democratic majorities.
