## Key points

- Trump says US will licence Ukraine to build Patriot air defence systems.
- Patriots are Ukraine's most requested defence against Russian strikes.
- Announcement coincides with a NATO summit on defence spending.

## Summary

US President Donald Trump has said the United States will grant Ukraine a licence to manufacture Patriot air defence systems, a move that could represent a significant shift in policy on arming Kyiv. Patriot systems are among the most sought-after air defences for Ukraine, which has repeatedly requested more of them to counter Russian missile and drone attacks, making domestic production a potentially major boost to its long-term defensive capacity.

Trump made the remarks on Wednesday, with the announcement coinciding with discussions at a NATO summit where Ukraine and allied defence spending featured prominently. The development comes amid wider debate over US missile stockpiles, with a retired general noting that supporting Ukraine has strained current inventories and stressing the need for increased funding and a stronger defence industrial base. Further specifics of the licensing arrangement were not detailed in the available report.
