## Key points

- Trump says White House repairs were needed.
- Obama mocked Trump’s gold decor and building projects.
- The two presidents traded criticism over the renovations.

## Summary

Donald Trump defended his White House renovations at a Mississippi rally, claiming Barack Obama had left the building dirty, damaged and in need of repair. His remarks followed Obama’s joke that Trump’s gold decor and building projects made the White House look like “Saddam Hussein opened a Cheesecake Factory”; the dispute highlights their contrasting views of the changes and Trump’s response to criticism.

Trump said he had noticed cracked windows and damaged exterior ornaments, and claimed the White House was now in better condition than when it was built. He denied spending all his time on renovations, saying he spots problems while walking from the Oval Office and asks staff to fix them. Obama had also cited Trump’s planned ballroom, paving of the Rose Garden and new South Lawn helipad as examples of his focus on construction.
