## Key points

- Trump rebuked a reporter who asked whether health or travel fatigue explained a cancelled Kansas rally.
- He said he felt well, then criticised the reporter’s appearance.
- Republicans said telephone rallies would reach voters in more states.

## Summary

Donald Trump rebuked Reuters reporter Jacob Bogage on 29 October after Bogage asked whether the president’s decision to skip a planned campaign rally in Kansas was connected to his health or fatigue from travelling. Speaking to reporters after returning from a rally in South Carolina, Trump said he felt “perfect” and that he did not need to visit Kansas because Republican senator Roger Marshall was doing well. He then criticised Bogage’s appearance, telling him to get in shape and saying he looked “like hell”.

The exchange followed a change to Trump’s schedule in the final days before the US midterm elections. Planned appearances in Kansas and Iowa had been replaced with telephone rallies, which Republican officials said would allow him to reach voters in more states. The scheduling decision prompted questions about his health, but the exchange itself offered no evidence that illness caused the change. Trump said the Kansas event was unnecessary and pointed to his recent campaign travel.
