## Key points

- Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress.
- Gains in traditionally Republican states marked a sharp shift.
- Trump’s agenda now faces stronger congressional opposition.

## Summary

Democrats won control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate in the midterm elections, dealing President Trump a major political setback. The results were framed as a referendum on his presidency, with voters’ concerns about the cost of living among the factors cited for the Republican losses.

Democrats made gains in several states that Trump had won comfortably in 2024, including Texas, Kansas, Iowa and Ohio, while South Carolina elected a Democratic senator for the first time since 1998. The article says a Democratic-led Congress could investigate Trump and his allies and block much of his legislative agenda, leaving him to rely more on executive powers and vetoes; the text provided ends before all results are detailed.
