## Key points

- Trump made his final midterm pitch at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.
- He discussed the pool’s refurbishment for more than 20 minutes before turning to the election.
- He urged his 2024 voters to back Republicans as control of Congress hangs in the balance.

## Summary

President Donald Trump delivered his final scheduled speech before the US midterm elections beside the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington on 2 November. He spent the opening part of the address describing repairs to the pool and other work on the capital’s landmarks, reaching the election more than 20 minutes in. He then urged people who had voted for him in 2024 to turn out for Republican candidates, saying their support could produce a landslide victory.

Trump praised his administration’s record on the economy, taxes and border security, and criticised Democratic candidates. He also acknowledged that the party of a sitting president usually struggles in midterm elections. The 3 November vote will determine control of Congress, shaping Republicans’ ability to advance his agenda and Democrats’ ability to scrutinise his administration. The pool’s refurbishment has itself drawn criticism over its cost and repair problems, making the choice of setting a conspicuous part of his closing appeal.
