Trump threatens Iran escalation as tit-for-tat airstrikes continue

NPR · 3 hours ago

The United States continued airstrikes in Iran while Tehran launched retaliatory attacks on US targets in the Gulf, as President Trump said he was considering a much larger military operation. The escalation raises the risk of a wider regional conflict, disrupts international travel and shipping, and has already driven oil prices sharply higher.

The US military said it had carried out strikes for a 13th consecutive night, targeting Iran’s capacity to threaten shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran reported attacks on US facilities in Bahrain and Jordan, while drones were intercepted near Erbil airport; meanwhile, the UK temporarily withdrew diplomatic staff from Iran and Qatar Airways suspended flights to Bahrain, Kuwait and Erbil until the end of July.

  • US and Iranian strikes continued as Trump considered escalation.
  • Hormuz disruption pushed oil above $100 a barrel.
  • Regional flights and diplomatic operations were curtailed.
