## Key points

- Trump was announced for telephone rallies in at least 19 states.
- Planned appearances in Kansas and Iowa were initially cancelled.
- Both in-person rallies were restored to the schedule the next day.

## Summary

President Donald Trump was scheduled to join telephone rallies in at least 19 states in the closing days of the US midterm campaign, after Republicans cancelled planned appearances in Kansas and Iowa. The Republican National Committee described the calls as a 72-hour effort to reach voters across the country before the 3 November election. It said Republicans were in a strong position in both states; Trump said he did not need to visit Kansas because Republican senator Roger Marshall was doing well in his re-election race.

The cancellations proved brief. A day later, Trump’s team restored in-person rallies in Dubuque, Iowa, and Salina, Kansas, for the Sunday before polling day. The telephone events had been presented as a way to support candidates in many states during a tight final campaign period, with control of Congress at stake. The rapid change of plans means the original announcement should be read as a snapshot of the campaign schedule, rather than its final version.
