The meeting comes as UN secretary general António Guterres urges the US and China to establish reliable communication on AI, while US lawmakers Bernie Sanders and Greg Casar prepare legislation to ban artificial superintelligence, pause advanced AI development and create a federal oversight agency.

The proposed bill has support from employees at major AI companies, amid warnings from industry leaders about potentially catastrophic risks and limited congressional regulation. Other developments included Trump’s UN speech, in which he threatened Iran, discussed the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, defended US actions in Latin America and criticised Mexico and international AI governance; a Greenland security agreement; a dispute with CNN; and the removal of 760,000 people from Affordable Care Act insurance marketplaces.
