Donald Trump has withdrawn Lance Schroyer’s nomination to lead Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), amid growing doubts about his qualifications and likely Republican opposition in the Senate. The decision represents a setback for Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, who personally knew Schroyer and had supported his appointment.

Schroyer, a former Oklahoma state trooper and former member of Mullin’s security detail, had never led a law-enforcement agency or worked extensively in immigration. His nomination faced scrutiny over his experience and allegations in court documents that he had failed to pay child support for four years; Senate Homeland Security Committee Chairman Rand Paul also delayed proceedings by requesting further information. David Venturella remains acting ICE director.
