President Donald Trump's pledge to give every American adult a $5,000 "dividend" if Republicans retain control of Congress in the November midterms is proving unpopular even among his own supporters, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll. The survey found that 63% of respondents disapprove of the plan, with nearly four in ten Republicans also opposed, undermining a proposal Trump had cast as a reward for the economy's performance under his administration.

The plan, announced at the Republican midterm convention in Dallas, would cost around $1.2 trillion given roughly 240 million eligible adults, and would require congressional approval as well as GOP control of both chambers, an outcome seen as increasingly unlikely. Even senior Republicans have voiced doubts: House Speaker Mike Johnson admitted the details still need to be worked out, while Florida Governor Ron DeSantis warned that borrowing up to $1.5 trillion to fund it would fuel inflation and add to the national debt, which the Congressional Budget Office projects will already run a $2.1 trillion deficit this year. Other Republicans, including Chip Roy, Thomas Massie and Marjorie Taylor Greene, have criticised or mocked the idea, while Vice President JD Vance has since suggested narrowing it to "American workers" rather than all adults.
