## Key points

- A judge paused construction for 14 days.
- The planning commission approved the 250-foot arch.
- Democrats say Congress could block the project.

## Summary

The National Capital Planning Commission approved President Donald Trump’s proposed 250-foot triumphal arch near Arlington National Cemetery, but a federal judge quickly halted construction for 14 days. The pause gives veterans challenging the project time to pursue their lawsuit, while Democrats who won control of both chambers of Congress say they plan to try to stop the monument.

The commission voted 8 to 4 after Trump appointed allies to it, despite more than 100,000 public comments, mostly opposing the arch. Representative Don Beyer, whose district includes the cemetery, said Congress must authorise construction and could block it through legislation or restrictions in the budget; the article ends before he explains the proposed legislation.
