The murder trial of Duane Keith Davis, known as "Keffe D", begins this week in Las Vegas, nearly 30 years after rapper Tupac Shakur was killed in a drive-by shooting. Nevada prosecutors accuse Davis, a former South Side Compton Crips leader, of orchestrating the fatal attack on 7 September 1996, which killed one of hip-hop's most influential figures and has remained one of the genre's most notorious unsolved crimes.

Shakur was shot four times while riding in a car with Death Row Records boss Suge Knight after attending a boxing match at the MGM Grand, and died six days later aged 25. Davis, now 63, was arrested in September 2023 and charged with murder with a deadly weapon and a gang enhancement; although not accused of firing the shots, he is alleged to have supplied the gun used and can be charged under Nevada's aiding-and-abetting laws. He has given conflicting accounts of his involvement over the years, including admissions in interviews and his 2019 memoir, before denying any role after his arrest — with a judge ruling the memoir's contents can be used as evidence. Jury selection starts Monday, and the trial is expected to last around four weeks.
