TV Vet Chuck Saftler to Depart Disney and FX After Nearly 33 Years

Variety · 3 hours ago

Chuck Saftler, a veteran Disney and FX executive credited with helping build FX into a major cable network, is stepping down after nearly 33 years with the company. Saftler joined in 1993 ahead of FX's June 1994 launch and most recently served as head of acquisitions for Disney's ABC, Freeform, FX and Nat Geo networks, having previously overseen business operations and library and acquisitions strategy for the group.

Announcing his departure in a staff memo, Saftler said he was stepping down to consider "a new professional chapter" after more than 32 years with Disney. Over his career he helped launch FX's original "TV made fresh daily" format before it shifted to acquired dramas such as "The X-Files", ran the Fox Movie Channel, and in 2013 struck a $750 million cable syndication and VOD deal bringing "The Simpsons" to FXX, a move that paved the way for the show's later home on Disney+. FX chairman John Landgraf and Disney Entertainment Television chairman Debra OConnell praised his "profound impact" on the company in a joint statement.
