Two teenagers from Framlingham, Suffolk, have been hospitalised with meningitis B, prompting the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) to offer preventative antibiotics to nearly 50 people who came into close contact with them. Both patients are said to be responding well to treatment, and officials stressed the general public risk remains low, though the case adds to a series of meningitis B clusters across England this year that have raised concern about the disease's spread among young people.

One of the affected teenagers had attended the Boardmasters Festival in Cornwall last month, though the UKHSA said there is no evidence linking the outbreak to the event itself. This follows earlier clusters in 2026, including a Canterbury nightclub-linked outbreak in March that killed two people and hospitalised more than a dozen, plus further cases in Dorset in April and Reading in May, one of which was fatal. Around 300 to 400 meningococcal disease cases are diagnosed in England annually, mostly affecting babies, young children, teenagers and young adults; the menB vaccine has been routinely offered to infants since 2015, and in June officials announced plans to extend vaccination to around a million teenagers heading to university or in their final year of sixth form.
