U.S. Bombing Of Iran Expands As American Troops Killed And Tehran Retaliates Against Gulf States

HuffPost · 1 month ago

US forces launched a ninth consecutive night of airstrikes on Iran on Monday, expanding the campaign after announcing the death of another American service member, while Iran retaliated by striking US-allied Bahrain and Kuwait. The exchange marks a further step towards all-out war between the two countries, as a temporary deal reached last month to end hostilities has collapsed, shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has largely halted, and both sides have hit civilian infrastructure.

US Central Command said it targeted Iranian military command centres, air defences, coastal surveillance sites, missile and drone launch sites and communications networks, with strikes reportedly reaching the north-western city of Tabriz, thought to house underground missile bases run by Iran's Revolutionary Guard. Iran's IRNA news agency said at least one person was killed there, with further strikes reported near Bandar Imam Khomeini, Sirik, Jask, Konarak and Chahbahar. A vessel was also set ablaze in the Strait of Hormuz after being hit near Oman's coast, and Yemen's Houthi rebels announced a maritime embargo against Saudi Arabia. The conflict has pushed Brent crude above $86 a barrel and US petrol to around $4 a gallon, adding financial pressure ahead of autumn midterm elections.
