U2 have released their version of The Pogues’ “Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah” ahead of a tribute album celebrating the late Shane MacGowan. The release highlights MacGowan’s continuing influence across rock, folk and punk, with U2 guitarist The Edge describing his contradictions, Irish inflections and distinctive artistic persona.

The track will appear on 20th Century Paddy – The Songs of Shane MacGowan, due on 13 November. The album, announced in March, also includes contributions from Bruce Springsteen, Hozier and Jessie Buckley, Tom Waits, the late Glen Hansard and others; Dropkick Murphys released their version of “The Body of an American” in June.
