Ubuntu 24.04's expected final scheduled point release, 24.04.5, was pulled from download just days after launch after a bug was found that crashes the installer when users select the extended installation option on the x86-64 desktop image. The release, published on 10 September, matters because it is very likely the last point update for the 2024 long-term support version, which remains supported alongside the newer Ubuntu 26.04. Users trying to download the desktop edition are currently served the older 24.04.4 ISO instead, while Server, WSL2 and Netboot images remain unaffected; existing installations are unaffected too, as updating them still results in 24.04.5.

The new release brings Linux kernel 7.0 and a Mesa 26.2 graphics stack via Canonical's Hardware Enablement (HWE) system, which pushes newer kernels and drivers to existing LTS installs, though some older hardware, such as certain Nvidia-equipped laptops, may need an older kernel to work properly. Separately, Ubuntu 26.10 "Stonking Stingray" is nearing its October debut, with a beta due on 24 September; it has entered feature freeze but will still ship with the newer Linux kernel 7.3, alongside GNOME 51, further replacement of core utilities with Rust versions, and a new speech-to-text tool called Myna.
