Uganda's King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, ruler of the traditional Tooro kingdom and once the world's youngest reigning monarch, was buried on Saturday in Fort Portal, days after a dispute erupted over who should succeed him. The 34-year-old king died last month while receiving cancer treatment in the US, having ruled since the age of three; his funeral has been overshadowed by a succession row that religious and political leaders fear could cause lasting division.

Clan elders named the king's cousin, TV presenter Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, 56, as the new monarch, and he performed a ritual at the graveside symbolising the transfer of power. However, Oyo's family rejected this choice, with his sister saying a 2022 will named the late king's young son as heir, while his mother alleged royal guards had been replaced by soldiers, restricting the family's movements. Uganda's Archbishop Stephen Kazimba Mugalu and President Yoweri Museveni both appealed for unity, while the Babiito clan defended its selection of Kijanangoma as being in line with Tooro tradition.
