UK Retailer GAME Entered Administration Owing A Staggering £16 Million

Nintendo Life · 17 hours ago

UK video game retailer GAME has entered administration owing nearly £16 million, according to a new report from administrators James Saunders and Lauren Wentworth of KR8 Advisory, as reported by The Herald. Once the country's dominant games retailer following its takeover of GameStation, the Frasers Group-owned chain had already lost all its standalone UK stores by February, with its remaining presence limited to concession outlets inside Sports Direct, underlining the collapse of the traditional high-street games shop model.

The administrators cited the shift from physical to digital game purchases, Brexit-related uncertainty and heightened competition as key drivers of the decline, alongside a lack of major console releases since 2020 and chip shortages delaying new hardware. GAME's debts include £3.35 million owed to secured creditors and £12 million to unsecured creditors. The firm previously fell into administration in 2012, closing 277 stores and cutting 2,104 jobs, before being bought by OpCapita and later sold to Frasers Group in 2019; with Sony confirming the end of physical game discs from January 2028, prospects for a large specialist retailer look increasingly bleak.
