A Ukrainian former lawyer, Oleksii Oleksiyovych Lytvynenko, has been sentenced to four years in a US prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud for his role developing malware for the Conti ransomware gang. The 44-year-old abandoned legal work to join Conti, a Russia-linked ransomware operation linked to more than 1,000 victims and at least $150 million in extorted ransom payments, highlighting how the group drew in members with unconventional backgrounds and continued attracting recruits even after its collapse.

Operating under the alias "henry", Lytvynenko, who later lived in Cork, Ireland, was recruited to build a malware loader and was found to possess stolen data from eight US and four overseas victims, with American losses exceeding $1.5 million. Investigators also traced Bitcoin transfers worth $25,042 to his activity, which he has been ordered to forfeit. Despite Conti disbanding in 2022 after its chats and source code leaked, Gardaí found him still active in ransomware operations when they raided his home in July 2023; he was extradited to the US in October 2025.
