Ukrainian man arrested in Croatia over Nord Stream pipeline blasts

BBC World · 2 hours ago

A Ukrainian man has been arrested in Croatia on suspicion of involvement in the September 2022 bombing of the Nord Stream gas pipelines, which ran between Russia and Germany. German prosecutors allege he was one of the scuba divers who planted the explosives, and he is the second suspect to be arrested in connection with the sabotage, a case that has strained relations between Kyiv and Berlin, a key backer of Ukraine's war effort.

The suspect, named by prosecutors only as "Vladimir Z" but understood to be Volodymyr Zhuravlyov, was previously arrested in Poland in 2025, where a judge refused to extradite him, arguing the attack could be seen as a "just" act if carried out by Ukraine. Germany is now seeking his extradition from Croatia. The other suspect, former Ukrainian officer Serhiy Kuznetsov, was extradited from Italy and is due to stand trial in Hamburg, accused of leading a team that used a rented yacht to place explosives near the Danish island of Bornholm; he denies responsibility. Kyiv has consistently denied any involvement in the blasts, which initially were blamed on Moscow.
