The United Nations is working with Google to make its global statistics easier for people and AI systems to find and use. The UN System Data Commons, built on Google’s open-source platform, replaces the older UNData portal and supports the Model Context Protocol, allowing AI agents to query authoritative data directly. The initiative matters because current AI models often provide inaccurate or inconsistent answers to questions about global development.

A UNICEF test of six major language models, covering more than 133,000 responses, found average accuracy of just 21.2%; around three in five answers did not provide a usable number, and repeated answers were identical only about half the time. Twenty-six UN entities have committed to the new platform, with data from nearly 20 available at launch, while the UN aims to include 80% of its statistical datasets by 2027. Google.org contributed $2 million and technical support, although the system is hosted under UN governance and is intended eventually to be operated independently by the organisation.
