A senior figure in Australia's industrial relations sector has pleaded guilty to possessing child abuse material after inadvertently showing illegal images during a university lecture. Alan Boulton, 76, a former senior deputy president of the Fair Work Commission, appeared at Melbourne Magistrates Court, where prosecutors dropped a more serious charge relating to sexual activity with a child under 16 overseas in exchange for his guilty plea on two counts of possessing the material. The case is significant given Boulton's prominent decades-long career in Australian workplace law and unionism.

The images were displayed during a lecture at Monash University in February 2025, prompting a police report and subsequent investigation, including searches of his homes in Melbourne and Sydney where electronic devices were seized. Charge sheets state the material was stored on a computer or data device, with offending dated between 3 and 12 February 2025. Boulton, a former Australian Council of Trade Unions lawyer who served as the commission's senior deputy president from 1993 to 2015, had his bail extended under conditions including no contact with prosecution witnesses, and will face a pre-sentence hearing at the Victorian County Court on 5 March.
