Alvarez was unconscious for two weeks after crashing into a tree in Greenville despite wearing a helmet, and later showed small signs of responsiveness, including moving his arm on request. His mother appealed the insurer’s decision several times with support from his doctors, while a family fundraiser argues a nursing home would not provide the therapy he needs. UnitedHealthcare said it sympathised with the family and that the plan covers alternative full-time care options, including rehabilitative therapy at a skilled nursing facility.
