The University of Edinburgh remains one of the UK's most sought-after universities, receiving more than 70,000 applications in September 2025 – the fourth time in five years it has reached this level. Founded in 1583, the institution enjoys a strong global reputation and is a leader in artificial intelligence and data science, hosting the UK's national supercomputer, Archer2. However, its international standing contrasts with more middling domestic rankings, as UK league tables factor in student satisfaction scores that have long been a weak point for the university, keeping it just outside the top 20 nationally.

The university has invested heavily in student facilities and support, including the reopening of the historic Teviot students' union after a 30-month refurbishment and a new Engineering Forum. Its Access Edinburgh Scholarship scheme costs around £10 million annually, offering means-tested bursaries of £1,000 to £5,000 a year, while a further £2 million funds academic and achievement-based scholarships. More than £900,000 was paid out in emergency hardship support in 2024-25, and undergraduate accommodation ranges from £3,726 to £18,776 for a 37-week self-catered let, with more than one in seven students admitted via contextual offers in 2025.
