Update on five-year-old girl critically injured in NRL grand final fan crash as her condition improves
Ten people were taken to hospital after a car struck football supporters at a Wallsend roundabout on Saturday as they gathered to farewell the Newcastle Knights before the NRL grand final. The five-year-old girl who was initially critically injured is now in a serious but stable condition, while the crash has left four people in hospital.
NSW Health said six patients had been discharged and three others were stable. Police allege 18-year-old provisional driver Indika Bambrick Samarasinghe was driving the BMW; investigators do not believe the crash was deliberate. He faces nine charges, including dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, was refused bail and is due in Newcastle Local Court on 15 October.
