US and Iran exchange strikes after two US deaths in Jordan attack
The United States carried out further air strikes against Iran on Saturday night, targeting coastal surveillance and air defence facilities, in retaliation for an attack that killed two US troops and left a third missing in Jordan the previous day. US Central Command said the strikes also hit Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps, blamed for the Jordan attack, while Iran responded with drone strikes on two US bases in Kuwait. The exchange marks a sharp escalation after a preliminary ceasefire agreed in June collapsed within weeks, with President Trump declaring it "over" on 8 July.
Iranian state media reported that Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz was struck, while Tehran said it launched "large-scale" kamikaze drone attacks on a US depot at Camp Udairi and Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait. Saturday's strikes were the eighth consecutive night of US action, aimed at curbing Iran's ability to threaten shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, which Tehran had declared closed. The US death toll in the conflict has now risen to 16 after a missing Navy pilot was declared dead, the second such increase this week, while Washington has reimposed its blockade of Iranian ports.
