## Key points

- The Justice Department is examining Lewandowski’s role in DHS contracts.
- Officials allege he approved contracts without legal authority.
- His lawyer denies wrongdoing; the probe followed an inspector general referral.

## Summary

The US Justice Department is investigating whether Corey Lewandowski personally profited from his work as a senior aide to former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. The inquiry matters because it concerns how federal contracts were handled and whether Lewandowski exceeded the authority allowed by his temporary government role.

The investigation followed a referral from the Department of Homeland Security inspector general and relates to contracts made under Noem. Officials told Reuters that Lewandowski approved some contracts despite lacking legal authority and put some grants and contracts, including FEMA-related ones, on hold. His lawyer said he denies wrongdoing and has not been contacted by the Justice Department; Noem also faced questions over a $220m advertising contract awarded shortly before she left office.
