US launches new wave of strikes against Iran after promising to ‘hit them hard’
The United States has carried out a fresh round of strikes on Iran, following President Donald Trump's warning that he would "hit them hard again tonight". The attacks, reported by Iranian state media across southern port cities including Bandar Abbas and Sirik on the Strait of Hormuz, mark a sharp escalation in hostilities between the two nations. The strait is a vital shipping route, and the confrontation raises fears over the safety of commercial navigation through the waterway.
US Central Command said the strikes were intended to "further degrade Tehran's ability to threaten freedom of navigation", framing them as retribution for recent Iranian attacks on commercial shipping. Iranian media reported multiple explosions, power cuts in Chabahar and a fire at an IRGC barracks in Bushehr, though the full extent of the damage is unclear. The exchange follows the collapse of a ceasefire deal signed on 17 June, which Trump has now declared "over", despite its 60-day negotiation window not yet having expired. Iran's foreign minister vowed to respond "with action", and Tehran earlier said it had targeted US military sites in Bahrain and Kuwait.
